Abstract

The influence of the Catholic Church and of religious belief by no means ended with the Middle Ages. Nevertheless, a number of cultural and intellectual forces combined to shift church tradition and religious customs toward the sidelines in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as Western Europe moved from the Middle Ages to the period we now call “early modern.” Many of these trends continued into the modern era.
