Abstract

When the Great War ended, millions of European soldiers who had lived through the carnage of war went home to rebuild their lives. A significant number of them, of course, could not just leave the war behind as an experience, a chapter in their lives. Many had found discipline, camaraderie, focus, and spiritual awakening at the front; war demanded that those who wished to survive be willing to give up everything that mattered in their lives for their friends in combat, a sacrifice that seemed to reveal what was truly important in life.
