Abstract

The Scientific Revolution is a simple and brief name for a relatively complex set of developments that shifted the focus of scientific inquiry from observations of the heavens to observation of the earth and popularized new methods of conducting that inquiry. These developments occurred in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Europe; they came out of the intellectual, political, social, and religious climate of the Protestant Reformation and the Renaissance, and they eventually led to another important intellectual movement, the Enlightenment.
