Abstract

Inspired by the revolutions in British North America and France, a series of revolutions—political, agricultural, demographic, and industrial—swept the Atlantic world at the turn of the nineteenth century. In 1807 French armies invaded Spain and drove out the Spanish king; a year later they arrived in Portugal to drive out the Portuguese king. The change in government created confusion and represented opportunity far away, in the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in the Americas.
