Abstract

Islam came to parts of India within decades of the Prophet Muhammad’s death in 632. Sometimes it came with violence, as the armies of the successors to Muhammad, or caliphs, ventured into central Asia and skirmished with the forces of Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms such as Thanesar under its dynamic ruler Harsha (r. 606–647). Sometimes it came more peacefully through the ancient seaborne trade to the port cities of Kerala on India’s southwest coast. In either case, Islam adapted to local traditions and produced a culture that adhered to the universal norms of the religion but also acknowledged differences unique to South Asia.
