Abstract

Representatives from Austria, Prussia, Russia, Great Britain, and France, along with other participants from across Europe, met at the Congress of Vienna in 1814 and 1815 to restore a system of authority and order interrupted by twenty-five years of revolution and war. Their attempts were only partially and temporarily successful. The “old order” that the congress participants sought to piece back together continued to be challenged and disrupted throughout the nineteenth century, and into the twentieth, by the forces released by the French Revolution.
