Abstract

New ideas about the nature and form of human institutions that emerged from the Enlightenment led many people to challenge the social and political status quo that prevailed throughout the Atlantic world during the “Age of Revolution” that lasted from the 1770s into the early 1800s. After a successful struggle for independence by colonists in British North America during the 1770s and 1780s, an upheaval in France that was otherwise based on similar principles took a more radical turn.
