Abstract

When Queen Isabella of Castille finally agreed to fund Christopher Columbus’s first expedition, she followed a precedent of long standing among the Christian monarchs of the Iberian Peninsula. With the collapse of Granada in January 1492, Ferdinand and Isabella brought to an end a five-hundred-year cru¬sade to eliminate independent Muslim kingdoms on the Iberian Peninsula. In its last years, this Reconquista was largely conducted by contractual arrangements—and the agreement made between Ferdinand and Isabella and Columbus was very similar to the contracts offered to the adelantados, or crusaders who fought in the war.
