Abstract

The signal feature of the Industrial Revolution was the shift in manufacturing from small, home-based, handwork-intensive operations to large-scale, mechanized, centrally located factory operations. The trajectory of this shift includes a number of innovations in manufacturing practices and technology that systematically rationalized labor and increased profitability through the reduction of man-hours per unit produced.
