Abstract

When people use or hear the word modern, they usually understand it to refer to the present day or to that which is most up-to-date. For historians, it means something very specific in terms of periodization—that is, a span of time defined by a set of identifiable characteristics. Modernity describes the features of a global society that became recognizable during the nineteenth century and that continue to influence the way that people live today.
