Abstract

The revolutionary age did not spring up in a vacuum. The works of many key thinkers of what has become known as the Enlightenment were crucial to developing the political and economic theories that led to revolutions in the United States and France as well as many other places. The Enlightenment was preceded by the Scientific Revolution—bringing a new focus on observation of and experimentation regarding nature and the natural world.
