Abstract

Few political philosophers and their works have changed the world as much as Karl Marx (1818–1883) and the Communist Manifesto. Although the schol¬ar-turned-journalist went on to write much more in the course of his life, includ¬ing a history of the French Revolution and an account of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, the little booklet written with his longtime collaborator Friedrich Engels and first published in 1848 remains his best-known work. Despite his fame, Marx lived most of his adult life in abject poverty.
