The Great War of 1914–1919, which resulted in the destruction of several empires, the invention of deadly new weapons, the slaughter of millions of soldiers and civilians, and the dismantling of the nineteenth-century world order, was a uniquely transformative event in world history. In 1914, Europe was an armed camp as the great powers vied for influence on the Continent and global hegemony through their far-flung colonies.
