Abstract

It is fashionable for the popular press to issue alarming warnings or at least to intimate subtly that economic and perhaps even military power is shifting from Europe and America to China and, to a lesser extent, India. What historians are well aware of, however, is that historically speaking, East Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East have often had dominant political and military entities and that for many centuries before the modern period these regions were engines of both the local and global economy.
