Abstract

By the year 1200, the world had changed dramatically from the way it had been only a century or two earlier. China, which had been the foremost empire on earth for several centuries, split into several separate states after the end of the Tang Dynasty in 907 CE. The Song (960–1279), which followed the Tang, could not muster the same resources and proved unable to unify China in the ways the Tang and the Han (206 BCE–220 CE) had done before them.
