Abstract

The Jesuits are a Roman Catholic order of priests and brothers, the popular name for members of the Society of Jesus, founded by Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) and canonically established by Pope Paul III in 1540. The organization’s original purpose was to support the Roman Catholic Church in its struggle with sixteenth-century reformers, to propagate the faith among nonbelievers, and to promote the salvation and perfection of the Jesuits themselves and of all humankind.
