Abstract

Toward the end of the twentieth century, dire warnings about irreparable environmental degradation, global financial disasters fostered by sweeping economic change, and the end of the decades-long Cold War all contributed to a widespread sense of global crisis. One set of concerns focused on damage to the environment caused by human activity.
