Abstract

In 1368 a revolution occurred in China. General Zhu Yuanzhang, the son of an ethnic Han Chinese peasant, overcame the foreign Yuan Dynasty and drove its Mongol emperor out of his imperial capital at Beijing. There were solid reasons behind the revolt: the Yuan had lost control of the imperial bureaucracy established by Kublai Khan almost a century earlier, and massive inflation had made the Chinese currency virtually worthless.
