Abstract

Understand the major historical elements and trends that constitute the transition from medieval to early-modern consciousness in western Europe. Describe the changing role of the Catholic Church from the time of the Black Death through the Protestant Reformation. How did the institution that possessed so much power and influence in the late medieval period become so easily fracture by the early sixteenth century? Identify the challenges that the church faced between 1348 and 1517 and explain how it responded to them.
