Abstract

The failure of strategy was the single most important factor in creating the horrific nature of the Great War. Every combatant embraced the “cult of the offensive” under circumstances in which defensive weapons, in particular the machine gun, dominated the battlefield. This is not to say that commanders lacked imagination or verve. In fact, the application of new tactics, training, and weapons to break the various stalemates, especially on the western front in France, by commanders on all sides showed great effort to adapt to circumstances.
