Abstract

Understand the origins, strategies, operations, and outcomes of World War I (1914–1918). World War I has often been called “the war to end all wars.” Subsequent history shows that it was nothing of the sort, but it may have been the “war to end modern civilization.” How do such phenomena as the lead-up to the war, the prosecution of the war, and the peace negotiations give historians a rationale for claiming that the Great War represented a point of no return for modern, Enlightenment civilization?
