Abstract

Understand the origins and long-term effects of the Cold War between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialists Republics. The Cold War is understood to be an ideological struggle (rather than a military war) between a free, Western, democratic bloc of nations and a totalitarian, Eastern, Communist bloc of nations. Which side won? What evidence do we use to show victory? What was the outcome of the war for the major nonaligned nations?
