Abstract

Today, few would dispute that we live in an increasingly global society. Satellite communications, the Internet, and mobile smart phones allow us to share culture worldwide, opening up the possibility of new identities and digital communities that reach around the globe. At the same time, the increasing connectedness of far-flung peoples through a globalized economy has spread financial risk around the world. Economic woes in one country can quickly spread to wreak havoc elsewhere, as in the global “Great Recession” that began in 2007.
