Abstract

World War II resulted in the death of tens of millions, millions more refugees, and extensive destruction across Europe and Asia. Six million of those who died were European Jews, victims of Nazi genocide. Global power arrangements changed radically, as did mentalities. Physically devastated and spent, European states lacked the means to undertake their own recoveries, turning instead to the United States and the Soviet Union for support. They also began relinquishing control of their overseas empires soon after the war’s end, a process that further reconfigured the world order.
