The Popol Vuh is a sacred text that recounts the founding myths of the K’iche’ people, one of the Maya peoples. The Maya, who now inhabit Central America and parts of Southern Mexico, were a highly sophisticated Mesoamerican society that flourished between 250 and 900 CE. During their Classical Period, the lowland Maya of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula built vast stone cities, plotted the movements of the stars, and developed the most advanced writing system of any Mesoamerican society.
