Originally published as a serialized novel in the Los Angeles newspaper El heraldo de México in 1928 with the title Las aventuras de Don Chipote, o, Cuando los pericos mamen, this novel represents what is perhaps the very first instance of Chicano identity being celebrated in a Spanish-language newspaper that catered to the ethnic Mexican community. Seven decades later it was published in translation as The Adventures of Don Chipote; or, When Parrots Breast Feed.
