Raúl Morín (1913–1967) was a U.S. veteran of World War II who became a civil rights activist in the 1950s and 1960s. Morín was born in Texas, but he moved to California in the 1930s and set up his own business as a sign painter in East Los Angeles before World War II broke out. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 and served with the 79th Infantry in the European theater. During the Battle of the Bulge (December 1944–January 1945), he was wounded in action and was sent home to recuperate. It was during that time that he conceived the idea to produce a book to highlight the contributions of Mexican Americans veterans—who were often treated with hostility and discrimination—in World War II.
