Abstract

During the summer of 1983, the Los Angeles Times published a series on the Latino community of Southern California. Created by Latino writers, photographers, and editors, this series told the complex story of the people and of the art, politics, religion, labor, and education related to the community. In addition, many articles explored the culture and tensions felt within the family unit. Although much of the series focused on telling the triumphs and successes, the creators did not shy away from highlighting the struggles faced within the Latino community in the early 1980s. The Los Angeles Times won the coveted Pulitzer Prize for Public Service following the publication of the series.
