The presidential election of 2016 proved to be one of the most contentious in modern American political history, reflecting the growing divisions between voters based on class, race, region, education, and gender. The Democrats selected as their candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton, former First Lady, U.S. senator, and secretary of state during President Obama’s first term. Long a fixture in U.S. politics, Clinton came to be viewed as controversial and unethical by many on the right, which rallied around an unconventional candidate for the Republican Party, real estate developer and reality show host Donald J. Trump.
