Abstract
José Angel Gutiérrez helped organize the Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO) because he grew up painfully aware of how society catered to the white population over Hispanics or others. Books, movies, magazine covers and articles, and newspapers all centered overwhelmingly on the white population while largely ignoring those of Hispanic heritage. This was also the case in areas such as education, employment, and medical issues.
