Abstract

José Martí (1853–1895) was a Cuban revolutionary and often called “Cuba’s National Hero.” Cuba and Puerto Rico were all that was left of Spain’s once vast empire in the Americas by the latter half of the nineteenth century. Cuba began wars for independence in the 1860s and in the 1890s was still fighting for its freedom.
