Abstract

Human civilization began to expand dramatically after the introduction of domesticated plants and animals in the Neolithic Agricultural Revolution. Some sources indicate that populations in heavily settled agricultural regions may have grown up to twenty times their original numbers within several hundred years between 8500 and 6000 BCE. The technological innovation that made this growth possible—intensive irrigation—also exposed the populations to new diseases.
