Abstract

The issue of the fall of the Roman Empire and its causes is one of the most discussed in history. Numerous theories have been put forward as the real cause of Rome’s end. Some theories of Rome’s fall focus on the internal decay of Roman society and the Roman economy dating from the late second century CE. The Roman population may never have recovered from the plague of 165. The lack of a regular system of imperial succession led to frequent civil wars that drained the empire.
