Abstract

Two near contemporaries, Confucius (ca. 551–ca. 479 BCE) and the Buddha (ca. 563–ca. 483 BCE), had an influence over Asian civilizations for millennia. Both of their lives—especially that of the Buddha—are shrouded in legend, and for this reason biographical claims are unreliable. The Buddha, or “Enlightened One,” is a title rather than a name. The person so designated was named Siddhartha Gautama, or Shakyamuni.
