Abstract

The study of China provides historians with a superb opportunity to observe the degree to which rupture and continuity in the historical process cooperate to form complex and enduring human civilizations. There are few nations in the world today that can claim such a direct and visible continuity to their prehistoric past, while having survived the transformative effects of the most violent kinds of revolutionary change.
