Abstract

The European peoples who claimed the mantle of control after the decline of the Western Roman Empire, while they were distinct, did share traits. They were, for the most part, Germanic in origin. They migrated into the lands of the Roman Empire, driven from their original homelands by aggressive groups such as the Huns. Their ways of life often diverged as they merged with the existing communities of the lands in which they settled.
