Abstract
The figure of the prophet, or “seer,” was both a familiar and an honored one in the ancient world and nowhere more so than in the Israel of biblical times. Throughout the Mediterranean and the ancient Near East, prophets were regarded as divinely gifted individuals who were believed to possess the power of predicting the future and channeling the will of the gods.
