Abstract

The early Middle Ages saw the development of a Europe that was unified. This unification was not a political unification under one monarch. Rather, it was a unification that was the product of a culture deeply infused with Christianity. In particular, this culture was based on a specific form of Christianity that was centered in Rome. Western Christendom bound the people of Europe together in many ways. In western Europe, Christianity was more than a set of religious doctrines and practices.
