Abstract

The heart of the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople, began life in the seventh century BCE as a Greek colony known as Byzantium. While its location along the Bosporus, the narrow strip of water connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara (providing access to the Mediterranean), has always given the city an important place along trade routes, it was not until the year 330 CE that the city truly gained prominence in the Mediterranean world. That year the Roman emperor Constantine moved the capital of his empire from Rome to this Greek city.
