Abstract

The origins of Greek civilization lie in the histories of the post-Neolithic cultures of Crete and mainland Greece—the cultures now called Minoan and Mycenaean. From roughly 3000 to 1100 BCE these societies dominated economic life in the Aegean Sea and interacted with the Bronze Age states of New Kingdom Egypt and the Hittite Empire, along with other cultures along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
