Abstract

The people of Greece, who in the classical world called themselves “Hellenes,” not Greeks, had an impact on society and culture far out of proportion to their numbers. They were the founders of traditions of philosophy, art, drama, history, and politics that endure to the present day. The area of ancient Greek civilization extended well beyond the boundaries of the modern nation-state of Greece.
