Abstract

Golden age Greece, during the fifth century BCE, saw the development of a culture that has influenced the rest of Western civilization. In Athens and in other parts of Greece, the thinkers and leaders of the independent city-states (poleis) developed and disseminated ideas about government, philosophy, architecture, science, and the arts—ideas that were admired by other ancient cultures, especially Rome, and have survived to the present day.
