Abstract

The precise origins of the Aztec are unknown, but this nomadic group of hunter-gatherers is thought to have come from mythical Aztlán, which is variously translated as the Land of the Heron or White Land. It is not known exactly where Aztlán may have been located, but the Aztec language, Nahautl, can be traced to the Uto-Aztecan language family found in northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. Groupings of Nauhatl peoples migrated southward at different times, beginning in the twelfth century.
