Abstract

After the decline of the Roman Empire, the peoples of Europe formed the basis of what would later become known as “western Christendom.” Despite the commonalities shared by many of these peoples, there existed significant differences as well. Over time, the organizational and cultural structures of Christianity would provide for some degree of unification, but in the ensuing centuries a number of disparate forces dominated Europe.
