Abstract

The Olmec and Maya civilizations stretched from present-day Honduras to central Mexico and along the Gulf of Mexico coastline. The Olmec civilization and successor cultures—which took shape and flourished during the Preclassic, or Formative, Period of Mesoamerican history (ca. 1200–ca. 400 BCE)—were centered in the present-day Mexican states of Veracruz and Tabasco.
