Abstract

From modest beginnings in a small town in Italy, the Romans established the first (and last) empire spanning the entire Mediterranean and left a legacy in politics, law, language, and religion that lives to the present day. Roman history is divided into two phases, the republic and the empire. The republic, whose origins stretch back to undocumented times, was characterized by political competition among members of the ruling class and a complex constitutional order, and the empire, beginning in 27 BCE, was characterized by one-man rule.
