Abstract

Paideia refers to the formation and education of a citizen of a Greek polis (with the exception of Sparta) through the liberal arts (grammar, logic, and rhetoric); arithmetic; morality (through study of music, poetry, and philosophy); and physical refinement in gymnastics and wrestling. The Greek tradition of the liberal arts has played a central role in Western civilization in a way similar to Confucianism in Chinese civilization.
