Abstract

For many years the Mediterranean world had been dominated by the Romans. This era of dominance lasted for centuries as Rome journeyed from life under Etruscan rule to an independent republic and eventually on to a vast empire. Life at the top did come to an end for this mighty power, and the year 476 is traditionally given as marking the fall of the Roman Empire. Such a focus on the year 476, however, renders the situation in western Europe and the greater Mediterranean world far too simplistic and can be misleading.
