Abstract

One of the most transformative forces of the Mediterranean and Near East world burst onto the scene in the seventh century CE. The religion of Islam developed within the peninsula of Arabia and spread rapidly. While Arabia is largely arid, Islam was not simply a religion of the desert. Islam was born in a commercial center, and the first converts to the new religion were the townsfolk of Mecca.
