Abstract

Human sacrifice: It is not known definitely if the Olmec people practiced human sacrifice, but the Mayan, Inca, and Aztec peoples did. To the Mayans, for example, human blood was symbolic of life. In order to continually maintain the order of the universe, they believed that blood had to be given back to the gods. The Mayan rulers combined political and religious authority and performed rituals involving human sacrifice in the temples.
